ӰPro (NMJC) recently concluded its highly anticipated New Mexico Junior College S.T.E.A.M. Enrichment Program (NSEP) summer camp, sponsored by Chevron, with an exciting theme of "Forensic Science." The week-long camp, held from July 15 – 19, welcomed 12 high school juniors and seniors from Lea County and surrounding areas to ӰPro’s campus for an immersive educational experience.
NSEP is an annual camp designed to inspire students through engaging activities integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.). This year’s camp provided participants with a hands-on exploration of the forensic science field including activities such as Music Bingo, a Murder Mystery Scavenger hunt, and more. "We were thrilled to host such a talented group of young scholars for our annual NSEP camp," said Recruiter, Deira Fernandez. The camp not only offered intellectual stimulation but also fostered camaraderie and personal growth among the attendees with game nights and fun icebreakers.
“Chevron is proud to support the ӰPro S.T.E.A.M annual summer camp, where NSEP captivates young minds and inspires a lifelong passion for learning and innovation,” said Beverly Allen, Public and Government Advisor for Chevron Delaware Basin. “Chevron takes a comprehensive approach to educational investments by funding programs that help excite students about math and science. These investments not only benefit the communities where Chevron operates but also empower our society as a whole.”
Throughout the week, campers had the opportunity to stay in ӰPro’s dormitory facilities, gaining a taste of college life while participating in the entertaining activities designed to expand their knowledge and skills in S.T.E.A.M. The camp ended in a ceremony attended by their families highlighting the student’s accomplishments as they completed the program.
“NSEP has been a success for three years on the ӰPro campus; and as the initial programmer, I cannot express how happy I am to see the smiles on the faces of these students each year. On top of that, it is great to see familiar faces coming to attend ӰPro now, after having attended our NSEP camp. These students bring such joy to our campus and we are very happy to host this wonderful program each year!”, said Valerie Onsurez Gauna.
As an added benefit, each student who attended NSEP received a $500 scholarship to attend ӰPro, providing further incentive for them to pursue their academic goals after high school graduation.
